Are Yellow Lenses Good for Night Driving?
Yellow-tinted lenses are widely marketed for night driving, but the evidence for their effectiveness is mixed at best. While they can reduce certain types of glare, they also reduce overall light transmission - which is counterproductive when light levels are already low. The most effective solution for night driving discomfort is anti-reflective coating on clear lenses, combined with an accurate prescription.
Anti-reflective coatings are probably the single most valuable addition to driving glasses. They eliminate internal lens reflections and dramatically reduce the halo and starburst effects around oncoming headlights at night - the kind that make night driving genuinely uncomfortable for many people. If you find night driving increasingly difficult, this is very often the primary fix.
Modern LED and xenon headlights are significantly brighter and more spectrally intense than older halogen lights - which is why many drivers who managed fine 10 years ago now find oncoming headlights genuinely uncomfortable.
For drivers with astigmatism, it's worth knowing that even a slightly off astigmatic correction can amplify the halo and starburst effects around headlights at night. Getting the prescription right matters more for night driving than people often realise.
