Eye Test Prices: What's the Difference, and What You'll Pay
At Northern Optical in Newcastle, an NHS eye test is free if you qualify. A standard private eye test is £35. For a more detailed look at your eye health, we can add 3D HD OCT retinal imaging - that's £20 on top of a free NHS test, or £55 for a private eye test with OCT included. We'll always tell you up front.

The £20 and £55 options add 3D HD OCT retinal imaging - a scan that lets us look beneath the surface of the retina and pick up signs of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy far earlier than a standard examination alone. It's optional, and it's the same scan whichever test you start from. Most of our patients who try it are glad they did.
